The Menai Suspension Bridge, opened in 1826 and at the time, the longest single span suspension bridge in the world. Built to improve communication between England and Ireland the first vehicle to use it was the London to Holyhead Royal Mail coach which reduced it previous time by nine hours. A requirement was that there should be 100 ft clearance at high tide to allow the Royal Navy sailing ships of the day to pass underneath. The shot was taken from Ynys Môn (The Isle of Anglesey) and shows Church Island to the left of the bridge.
